Este gênero é composto por cerca de 26 plantas terrestres distribuídas da Guatemala até a Argentina, sendo que a maioria das espécies, senão todas, são encontradas no Brasil. Crescem em condições sombrias em bosques primários ou secundários densos, geralmente arraigadas entre folhas secas e musgo. São plantas rizomatozas, de caule ereto, provido de 3 a 8 folhas horizontais, verde amarelado ou escuro, com ou sem reticulado prateado. Inflorescência ereta, apical e racemosa, com flores dispostas perpendicularmente.
