O gênero foi criado em 1959 por Schultes & Garay, a partir do antigo gênero Warszewiczella. Seu nome refere-se ao formato em concha do labelo de suas flores. Basearam sua descrição na Cochleanthes flabelliformis, que é a espécie tipo.

Cerca de 17 espécies hoje pertencem a este gênero. Estão amplamente distribuídas pela América tropical, encontradas até 1800 metros de altitude. São plantas epífitas sem pseudobulbos, com folhas dísticas formando um leque à maneira das Huntleya. Distinguem-se das outras plantas da aliança Chondrorhyncha pelo calo semicircular existente na frente da base do labelo.

Apreciam ambiente sombrio e muita humidade.
