O gênero Pleurothallis foi criado em 1813 por R. Brown 1813, para abrigar o Pleurothallis ruscifolius (Jacq.). Há muitos sinônimos para este gênero, que tem o maior número de espécies dentre todos os gêneros Americanos, e é encontrado por quase toda a parte neste continente. É também o mais vasto gênero brasileiro.

São plantas epífitas, ocasionalmente terrestres ou rupícolas, e morfologia das espécies é extremamente variada, desde miniaturas de alguns milímetros até plantas com quase um metro. Seu cultivo é igualmente variado, de acordo com seu ambiente de origem.
